my concept map...

Creating this concept map was... really illuminating, because it kind of forced me to cram elements of my educational philosophy paper along with my own professional goals into a concise format with some logical framework... I am not sure if I was successful, but I enjoyed working on it, and see it was a "First Step" in a much larger introspection that will likely shape the next years of my life as I begin my career.

Hope you all enjoy!

Laura - your active structure pulls one right into your map: empower, establish, continue, act, engage, give, become, and find -- key to your success that I see standing out of your map is "to keep my motivation intact." Certainly, challenges will come your way from agencies and people who will literally stand in the way of of positive education experiences. You exude a sense of cionfidence that will serve you well. -- Terry

Laura - another comment - Concept maps can be even more valuable for teaching when you use graphics, photos, and varied colors. In your Kindergarten class, you could do an example for them on whatever topic you are working on right now. Here is a link to a study on concept mapping in kinder - but now using software. -- Terry

A typo in my previous comment post:

I said - but now using software

but I meant - but NOT using software.

Thanks, Terry. I really do like the idea of using Concept Mapping for use in the classroom, and wish that I had been able to figure out how to import/use more graphics and things. I will have to spend some more time with the INSPIRATION software and experiment with ways to make the map more diverse and visually interesting. I tried to use a hand drawn concept map/graphic organizer in class with my kids the other day, and it came out kind of mangled. It helps me a lot if I can have a strong idea of what I want to achieve in the map, and the use I want to have specifically... before I get started. Ah, the learning curve.

Hi Laura,

  • Thanks for your kind comments on my concept map! I also thoroughly enjoyed viewing yours. I feel that our concept maps in some ways describe how we are as learners and educators and it was interesting to see the similarities and differences in our maps. You have such a way with words and organization!

In my prioir post I spoke about Laura's philosophy of education paper. For those of you who don't know that was a paper that we wrote in our first quarter at Antioch. I love that Laura was able to have such continuity in her methodologies that even in our last quarter she is still thinking about that paper. Laura, I really feel as if your coments about yourself in regards to each level of teaching are thoughtful and insightful. Thank you

Laura,

I enjoyed reading, and connecting to the thoughts, values, and opinions expressed on you content map. I wonder how it will change or be added to by next year.
